70 employees of 5-star hotel fall sick

Fifty-four employees were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

Over 70 employees of a prominent five-star hotel fell sick here today after taking food from the staff canteen this afternoon,in a suspected case of food poisoning.

The employees complained of uneasiness at around 2:30 pm after having lunch at the canteen of Hotel Shangrila,a senior police official said.

Fifty-four employees were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

“It appears to be a case of food poisoning. None of them is in serious condition. We are examining the matter,” the official said.


The official said the staff,including security personnel and kitchen staff,had lunch at around 12:30 and many of them reported dizziness and stomach pain by three pm. “Apparently they consumed stale food,” he said.

A case under section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigations are on.

In a statement,the hotel said,more than 70 employees reported feeling unwell in the afternoon and hotel’s in-house doctor immediately attended to them and subsequently,some were sent to RML Hospital for further medical assistance.

“The hotel is extending its fullest cooperation with the health authorities to determine the cause of their symptoms and will conduct an internal investigation as well.

“Shangri-La maintains stringent hygiene policies and adheres to the government’s Food Safety Management System to ensure a clean and safe environment for our colleagues. The management team is closely monitoring the health status of the colleagues and will render any required assistance during this time,” it said.
