Five passengers were charred when a private bus caught fire near Talegaon in Wardha district of Maharashtra on Thursday morning.
SP Anil Paraskar said the incident occurred around 5 am when most of the 30 passengers on the Jalgaon-Nagpur bus were asleep.“One of the passengers noticed the fire in the middle part of the bus and asked the driver to stop. The driver applied brakes but before all passengers could disembark, the fire had engulfed the entire bus,” said Paraskar.
Two women, a nine-month-old boy and two men died in the tragedy while many were injured. “A man who got down in the melee said his wife and child had got stranded. But we haven’t been able to identify the bodies yet,” said the SP. The name of the man was stated to be Sunil Paul, a resident of Varanasi. His wife Shweta and their son apparently died in the mishap.
“We are not yet sure how the fire was ignited,” SP Paraskar said.
