A 30-year-old businessman has been arrested for killing his live-in partner. Police said Umakant Pandit alias Anil has smothered Rachna,chopped up her body to fit it into a suitcase and set it on fire. Pandit,police said,had also tried to dispose the remains of the corpse,but was arrested on Monday from Rohini.
Police were informed by a neighbour who reportedly saw Pandit dragging the suitcase,from which blood was oozing out. Pandit was arrested when he returned to the Rohini home,where he was living with Rachna,to allegedly destroy the evidence and collect the registration certificate of his car.
According to police,both Rachna and Pandit were married Rachna had two children aged 10 and 6,while Pandits wife and children lived in a different house.
Pandit,who has a business of fabrics,and Rachna had been living together for the past seven months,police said.
He told police that of late Rachna had started to expect too much from him and so he planned to kill her.
He asked one of his friends for help and they bought a red suitcase. The next morning,he strangled and smothered her to death. They planned to put the body in the suitcase and take it to an isolated place in Haryana for disposal, a senior police officer said.
Police recovered only half of Rachnas body from the spot.
The neighbour who called police said Pandit and his friend,Sumit,were wearing gloves. Right after the call,police rushed to the Rohini house.
A team rushed to the spot but the accused had already fled. During inspection of the suspected scene of crime,blood stains were detected on the floor of the flat and a foul smell emerged from inside the room, said Tajinder Luthra,Joint CP (Northern Range).
Police teams were stationed at the Rohini house and sent to the home where Pandits family lived. A team was also sent to Aman Vihar,where Rachnas family lived.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police P Karunakaran said,When the accused returned to collect the RC of his car and wipe out the evidence,he was apprehended and questioned. He accepted his involvement in the crime.
Police are on the lookout for Sumit and post-mortem reports are awaited.
Rachnas mother Dharamvati Devi told Newsline that her daughter got married to one Banarshi Dass at the age of 17. Banarsi was jobless and Rachna worked at a glass-making company to meet the household expenses,she said.
Around six months back Rachna told us that Banarsi wanted to sell her off. He had spoken to a few people and someone had offered him Rs 70,000, Dharamvati said.
Dharamvati said Rachna wanted to leave her husband and return home. We did not approve of her leaving her husband and warned her that if she did any such thing,we would snap all ties with her, said Dharamvati.
