The Punjab Police on Wednesday took 155 people in preventive custody owing to 17 farmer and labour organisations resorting to “rail roko” agitation on Wednesday. To avoid inconvenience to the public at large, the state had decided to keep rail tracks and national highways open. “To prevent leaders and workers of these organizations from disrupting rail and road traffic, police parties conducted raids at 319 places and took 155 activists into preventive custody early morning. No incident of violence occurred in the state. Rail and road traffic plied normally except a slight delay at Tangra and Dhulke where small groups of people had squatted on rail tracks,” a statement by the government said. During the course of day, another 1,353 people were detained.
