A 12-year-old boy was beaten up and burnt alive at Malerkotla in Sangrur district on Monday.
The family of the boy,identified as Vibhu Jain,protested by blocking roads and damaging four buses even as tension gripped the area. A traffic jam continued till the time of filing of this report.
SP(D) Paramjeet Singh Goraya said the situation was under control and police teams were conducting raids to arrest the culprits.
Details revealed that Vibhu was going to school to deliver food to his younger brother. Vibhu did not have classes because of ongoing exams. On his way,he was gheraoed by some people and taken to Bhardwaj colony,where he was beaten and burnt alive with kerosene.
Sources said Vibhu had recently fought with a boy from whom he had purchased kites. However,the police have registered an FIR against unknown persons.
Vibhus father Navneet Jain is a popular figure in Malerkotla. Following the protest by their family,a curfew-like situation prevailed in Malerkotla since 3 pm. The police resorted to lathicharge on the relatives of Vibhu late in the evening as they were not vacating the state highway.
MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa condemned the incident.
