Chandra Mohan Jha, ‘chancellor’ of the scam-tainted CMJ University in Meghalaya who was arrested four days ago, has been sent to 10 days’ police custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Shillong. Wanted in connection with a case of alleged fraud committed by him in the name of the private university, Jha was arrested by the Meghalaya Police CID from Madhubani in Bihar on Tuesday.

The Meghalaya Police, while producing him before Shillong Chief Judicial Magistrate Balram Joshi after he was flown in from Bihar Thursday evening, had sought 14 days’ custody. But the court granted custody of 10 days, a police official said in Shillong.

The police have already begun interrogation of Jha in connection with a cheating case registered last year.

A rags-to-riches story, Jha, originally a petty supply contractor, had shot into prominence early last year when then Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary had detected massive irregularities in functioning of the CMJ University, Meghalaya’s first private university set up in 2009. Jha had disappeared soon after the Meghalaya CID registered a case against him.

He later obtained interim bail from the Supreme Court, following which he did appear before the court in Meghalaya in September last year. But while the Meghalaya Police got the Supreme Court’s interim bail order vacated, Jha disappeared again, until he was tracked down with the help of Bihar Police in Madhubani, where he was contesting as an independent candidate for the Lok Sabha election from Jhanjharia constituency.
