Girls are to be sent out 15 minutes before boys in

co-education schools

In an attempt to check rampant eve teasing, the Director General of School Education (DGSE),Punjab, has directed principals, headmasters and teachers of all government schools to be present at the main gates during opening and closing of school hours.

Schools heads have also been asked to take help from the police and civil administration in case eve teasers do not listen to them. In addition, girls are to be sent out 15 minutes before boys in co-education schools. Orders have also been issued to depute teachers to classrooms during free periods while no girl will be allowed to sit alone in classrooms during free periods.

The orders have been issued after the DGSE office received a spate of complaints regarding girls being harassed while coming to school. “Many parents complained to us and are worried about the safety of their girls from the eve-teasers which led the DGSE office to take some serious steps to stop this nonsense,” said a senior officer in the DGSE office adding that over 100 eve-teasing complaints were received in the past few months. A letter from DGSE office has already been sent to all the government schools of the state.

In a letter to the DGP,Punjab, the DGSE has also requested that PCR vehicles be stationed near schools during opening and closing hours. The DGSE has also written to deputy commissioners and SSP’s of all districts to act immediately on getting such complaints.
