Three of family killed in car accident on Mumbai-Pune E-way

Three members of a family from Thane,lost their lives after their car veered off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and fell into a nullah in Lonavala on Monday.

Three members of a family from Thane,lost their lives after their car veered off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and fell into a nullah in Lonavala on Monday. Even the car driver,died on the spot.

According to police,the accident occurred around 2:15 pm in the Deole village. The Gandhi family was on its way to Pune to attend the funeral of a relative,when their car lost control and veered to the edge of the Pune-bound lane on the expressway.

“ The victims died due to drowning,” said Dilip Bhujbal,Superintendent (Pune),Maharashtra Highway Police. Eyewitnesses informed the highway police control room who reached the spot within an hour. Villagers from Deole also joined in the rescue operation and the five victims were pulled out of the nullah,while the car was pulled out later using a crane.

The deceased have been identified as Vasant Gandhi (75),Sarojini Gandhi (70),Jitendra Gandhi (52) and car driver Devidas Marathe (44). Jitendra’s wife Jayshree (51) escaped with minor injuries. The Lonavala Rural police has registered an accident report and is probing if there are enough grounds to book Marathe for causing the accident.
