Six miscreants arrested in Jhajjar

In two separate incidents of exchange of gunfire between police and miscreants in Jhajjar district on Tuesday,at least six people were arrested,while four managed to escape. In the first incident,Aman and Arjun were arrested.

In two separate incidents of exchange of gunfire between police and miscreants in Jhajjar district on Tuesday,at least six people were arrested,while four managed to escape. In the first incident,Aman and Arjun were arrested. Their third accomplice,Neeraj,managed to flee. The three were allegedly going to attack a Badli village resident,Ranbir,who is the prime witness in his brother’s murder case. In the second case,four people were arrested,while three others managed to escape. Pradeep and his gang were allegedly going to kill the village sarpanch Risal Singh’s son Sanjay. Sanjay,who is also facing an attempt to murder charge,is at present out of jail and had attacked Pradeep’s gang member,last year.

Three injured in car-train crash

Jalandhar: Three people,including two girls,were injured when an Alto car was hit by a train at an unmanned railway crossing in Mahuwal village on Tuesday. Following the accident,villagers blocked rail traffic. The injured have been hospitalised.

12-year-old commits suicide

Jalandhar: The body of a 12-year-old Class VII student was found hanging in his home at Jawahar Nagar on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the boy had committed suicide. While his mother is in Kuwait,his father had died some time ago. He had been living with his maternal grandmother Lakshmi Devi,who had gone to work. When she returned,she couldn’t open the door and sought help from neighbours. When they finally opened the door,they found boy hanging from the ceiling fan. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Cops seize 4 mobiles in Amritsar jail

Amritsar: Four mobile phones were recovered from Amritsar Jail after a special cell conducted a surprise raid on Tuesday. Two of the mobiles were buried near the kitchen of the inmates,while the others were recovered from an open area,said ADCP (special) Baljit Singh Randhawa.

SGPC kabaddi team in Dubai tournament

Amritsar: Following request by Dubai-based businessman S P Singh Oberoi on Tuesday,the SGPC has decided to send its kabaddi team of Sabat Surat Sikhs for a championship at Dubai in October. “Among all the participating teams in different kabaddi tournament,no teams have all the members as Sabat Surat Sikhs. So,I have requested SGPC to send their team to the tournament,” Oberoi said. SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh confirmed the team will go to the tournament.

Girl kills self after being ‘harassed’

Shahkot: A girl committed suicide at Daulatpur Dhadde village in Shahkot after allegedly being harassed by a granthi in a gurdwara. According to police,Granthi Harman Preet Singh,in his late 20s,had interfered in Ramandeep Kaur’s (22) engagement twice. The girl’s kin had reportedly also beaten the granthi for harassing her. On Saturday night,Kaur allegedly consumed Celfas tablets. She was rushed to hospital where she died on Sunday night. Police have booked the granthi,who is absconding.

Sukhbirs urges dialogue with Iran

Chandigarh: Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to initiate a dialogue with Iran for greater trade and commerce interaction between the business communities in Punjab and their counterparts in the Middle East and West Asian countries.

Home dept official caught with bribe

Chandigarh: The CBI on Tuesday allegedly caught a superintendent in the Punjab home department red-handed,while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a Muktsar resident. As per the complainant,Superintendent Tejvir Singh Walia had demanded the bribe to clear a file pertaining to extension of a gun license to four states.
