Taking a serious view of the seed subsidy scam, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday directed the Punjab government to decide a legal notice in this regard within three months. The directions were passed on a petition filed by former sarpanches and panches seeking a CBI probe into the scam,in which “thousands of crores of rupees” were allegedly misappropriated in connivance with officials.

As the petition filed by Shalinder Singh and others came up for hearing,a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice R K Jain directed the principal secretary (Agriculture) to decide a legal notice — dated May 31 — issued to the agriculture department to hold a detailed probe into the scam.

The petitioners contended that they have filed the PIL “to show that at the grassroots level, the picture was still pitiable in spite of the big promises made by the government”.
