A 22-year-old man,who allegedly escaped from Sonepat Jail early this year along with seven others,was arrested by Delhi Polices Crime Branch on Saturday.
Chunu,who carried a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head,was arrested from Pitampura in Northwest Delhi where he had gone to meet his friends.
He is reportedly involved in six criminal cases,including murder,encounters with police and a bank robbery.
Police said he escaped from the Sonepat Jail on the night of January 18. Chunu and the others had meticulously planned the jailbreak. Some members of the jail staff connived with them and there were friends waiting outside the prison to help them escape. They had smuggled in a mobile phone and iron cutters with the help of some jail staff, DCP (Crime) Sanjay Jain said.
Police have arrested five prison officials in connection with the jailbreak from Sonepat Jail early this year.
After getting the mobile phone and the iron cutters,Chunu threw a party and got halwa prepared in the jail. They mixed sedatives in the halwa. When everybody in the barracks were asleep,they worked their way out of jail, Jain said.
They scaled the roof and reached the rear wall of the jail where their associates were waiting,the DCP said. The associates threw ropes over the boundary wall and helped Chunu and the others escape, Jain said.
Police didnt explain how the prisoners managed to get hold of the sedatives.
