For those who are shocked at,or are ready to write off as a freak mishap,the death of 29 pilgrims in a road accident in Bhiwani on Monday,here’s a reality check.

Twelve persons are killed and at least 30 are injured every day on Haryana roads. In fact,more than 4,700 people lost their lives in road mishaps in Haryana in two years – 2010 and 2011.

As per the statistics maintained by the Haryana police,the state is ranked tenth in the country as far as road fatalities are concerned. Till June 11 last year,4,619 accidents took place on Haryana roads with 1,817 being fatal resulting in death of 2,039 people. More than 4,000 were injured. However,till June 9,2012,the police recorded 4159 accidents,out of which 1,770 were fatal killing 2041 persons and leaving 3,829 injured.

An analysis of road accidents conducted by the Haryana State Crime Records Bureau found overspeeding and overloading of vehicles as the two major causes for the ‘mass road fatalities’.

The analysis also revealed that that the heavy vehicles,including trucks,buses,lorries and canters,contributed to maximum number of fatal road accidents. It also revealed that a majority of the road mishap victims were in the age group of 25-40 years.
