The president of the Bharti Kisan Union,Balbir Singh Rajewal,on Monday said that the Centre was going to back out from giving drought relief to the farmers of Punjab and that they must be prepared to gherao Cong MPs.
In a statement issued here,Rajewal said there was almost no rain during June to August 20 this year and the power supply to tubewells never lasted for more than four to six hours a day during this period.
The farmers had to bear a huge extra cost of irrigation and had to spend a huge amount on diesel to run their tube wells. All these extra costs have not been taken into account while fixing MSP of these crops. This will ruin the farming community. If no package is granted, the farmers and BKU have no option left but to take direct action of indefinite gherao of Congress MPs, he added.
A delegation of Union Ministers Sharad Pawar and Jairam Ramesh was recently presented with a case for providing Rs 5,540 to the farmers of Punjab by the Bharti Kisan Union.
