The Full Court (comprising all judges) of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday recommended “compulsory retirement” of two Haryana judges. The recommendation has been sent to the government for immediate compliance.

The recommendation was made by the high court on grounds of “unsatisfactory work, conduct” and keeping in view “public interest”. Both the judges are posted in Haryana, with one of them being a senior judge in Panchkula.

The development assumes significance as such a recommendation is only made if the conduct and judicial functioning of a judge is found unsatisfactory. According to sources, one of these judges had been charged with “moral turpitude” by a court employee.

Such a recommendation also implies that the two judges will refrain from judicial work. Meanwhile,it is on the Haryana government to decide on the recommendation made by the Full Court. It is only in exceptional circumstances that the government writes back to the high court with queries.
