Excise officer suicide: SIT may arrest SP

A special investigation team formed to probe into the last year’s suicide case of an Excise and Taxation Officer,may arrest a Punjab Superintendent of Police who had falsely booked the ETO in a false case.

A special investigation team (SIT) formed to probe into the last year’s suicide case of an Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO),may arrest a Punjab Superintendent of Police who had falsely booked the ETO in a false case.

ETO Ranjeet Singh had committed suicide days after he was arrested by a vigilance team headed by SP Amandeep Kaur on March 29,2011,allegedly while accepting caught bribe to release the goods of a trader.

Later,Kaur,head constable Harminder Singh and three traders – Rajinder Singh,Rajiv Sood and Paramjit Singh – were booked under Prevention of Corruption Act,abettment to suicide,criminal intimidation and misconduct,forgery and creation of false evidence.

A special investigating team headed by SP (D) Balwinder Singh,DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal,and SHO Gurdeep Singh has now been set up to probe the matter further,SSP,Mohali,Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said on Monday.

Following the directions of the state government,an inquiry was conducted into the case by a team of two officers Mansavi Kumar and Harpreet Singh Sidhu. In their report they had indicted the SP and others of abettment to suicide. Also,based on a plea moved by Manjeet Kaur,the wife of the deceased ETO,the Mohali court had on July 27 directed the police to register a case against the guilty officials. The order came after SP Amandeep Kaur’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected on July 20.

After being arrested by the vigilance team on March 29,Ranjit was released on bail by a court on April 20. Three days later,he committed suicide by consuming sulphas pills at his Phase-II residence. His wife had filed a petition in the court stating that her husband was implicated in a false case which compelled him to commit suicide.

Man killed pregnant wife for not granting divorce

JALANDHAR: The police on Monday claimed to have solved the case of a young pregnant woman who was found murdered near Bhadman village here on Friday. Her husband Harvinder (19),who was having an extra-marital affair,had killed Mandeep Kaur (21) as she was not ready to grant him divorce,Shahkot SHO Prem Kumar said. Harvinder attacked his wife with a sharp edged weapon when they were on way to his native Parijan village from Mandeep’s parental residence in Rampur. He had inflicted injuries on his person too and had claimed that they were attacked by robbers.
