‘Don’t pay hiked power tariff’

While asking people not to pay the power tariff hiked with retrospective effect, state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday told them to get in touch with party workers in case action was initiated against them by power corporation officials for not paying the bills.

While asking people not to pay the power tariff hiked with retrospective effect, state Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday told them to get in touch with party workers in case action was initiated against them by power corporation officials for not paying the bills.

Amarinder was addressing a state level dharna organised in Jalandhar to protest against the steep hike in power tariff with retrospective effect as well as imposition of extra VAT on sugar and cellphones.

“How can the government charge increased power tariff from April 1? If officials try to disconnect your power supply or take any legal action, then get in touch with the Congress,” he told the crowd.

Alleging that the “cash-starved” government was planning to impose taxes worth Rs 9,000 crore in the coming months,Amarinder asked,“Why didn’t the fund starved SAD-BJP government do this before the municipal corporation elections? This is not the right way to generate revenues,as such punitive taxes can only cripple the economy and not strengthen it,” he added.

Slamming the government for imposing taxes on essential commodities like sugar,he said: “This is wrong. The government should ideally widen the tax base by bringing in industry, which will pay taxes.”

He also demanded that state government should give an undertaking that the special assistance of Rs 800 crore, which it had demanded from the Centre for farmers’ relief, will indeed be given to farmers and not diverted for other purposes.

Chandigarh: The Sanjha Morcha will protest against the hike in electricity tariff at all district headquarters on August 8. People’s Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Badal said,“People are suffering under a drought-like situation. However, the SAD-BJP government, instead of coming to their aid,has imposed a heavy burden on people.”
