The trial court that sentenced Ajmal Kasab to death has permitted Mumbai Police to collect original recordings of intercepts made by intelligence agencies during the 26/11 terror attacks, and match them with voice samples from Zabiuddin Ansari, one of the attackers’ alleged Lashkar handlers.

A match, the Crime Branch hopes, will establish the identity of Ansari,a native of Beed who was deported in June by Saudi Arabia. Ansari is alleged to have taught the 26/11 assault team Hindi words and phrases, and directed the terrorists in Chabad House by phone from the Lashkar control room in Karachi. He is also thought to be the handler whom Kasab had described as ‘Abu Jundal’.

The Crime Branch had made Ansari repeat the words spoken by the intercepted voice from Karachi.

The samples were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina nearly a month ago,but voice spectrogram tests could not be conducted until the original recordings, submitted to the trial court as evidence, were released.

“The permission to collect the original recordings was granted a few days ago. We will send the samples for voice spectogram tests within the next few days,” a Crime Branch officer said. The results of the tests can be expected in 15 days, the officer added.

“If the voices match,we will be able to make a strong case against Ansari,” he said.

The handler in the Lashkar control room had been recorded saying,“Huqumat yeh jaan le yeh trailer hai, asal film baaki hai” (Let the administration know that this is only the trailer, the film is yet to come).

The handler used Hindi words like ‘prashasan’,and instructed the gunmen to identify themselves as “Deccan Mujahideen from Hyderabad” and to put forth demands like withdrawal of security forces from Kashmir, building a mosque at the site of the Babri Masjid, and handing over of “Muslim states to Muslims”.
