Two constables posted at the Kalwa police station in Thane were injured after they were allegedly stabbed by a habitual offender they had gone to question on Monday. The two constables,Avinash Waghchoure and Arun Bangar, were rushed to a hospital and are now out of danger, officers said.

“Gaikwad is a known offender and wanted in house-break-in theft cases. The two constables had gone to question him in connection with another case when he stabbed them. We are on the lookout for Gaikwad,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Ashok Dudhe of Thane Police.

Sources said when Waghchoure and Bangar went to Gaikwad’s house around 1 am on Monday, his wife and relatives did not let them enter.

“They were able to enter later but when they took him into custody and walked out,Gaikwad took out a knife from under his shirt and stabbed Waghchoure in the stomach. As Bangar tried to stop Gaikwad, his relatives caught and assaulted Bangar, giving the culprit enough time to escape,” said an officer.

The two injured policemen called their colleagues for back-up and a team arrived at the spot to arrest Gaikwad’s wife Matura and his aunt.
