Youth dies of electrocution

LUDHIANA: Tension prevailed at Khera Khurd village in Mansa district on Sunday after Aman Singh (24) died of electrocution while he was repairing a fault on an electricity pole. Aman,a resident of Jhandakalan village,was an employee of PSPCL. As he was repairing the fault,power supply was restored from PSPCL,leading to his death. Angry villagers blocked traffic for more than three hours with Aman’s body till an FIR against PSPCL officials was registered. Following the incident,Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs 2 lakh for the family of the deceased and also asked the PSPCL to give a suitable job in Powercom to Aman’s next of the kin.

Mansa clash: Relief cheques distributed

LUDHIANA: The Mansa district administration on Sunday distributed relief cheques worth Rs 5 lakh each to the families of Preetam Singh and Sukchain Singh,who were allegedly killed in the clashes between villagers and police,in Akalia village a few days back. Tehsildar Rupinder Singh Bal went to the victims houses to present the cheques and announced a government job to one family member each of both the families. Meanwhile,the chief minister ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident on Sunday.

Ludhiana,Faridkot get special courts

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has decided to set up two special courts at Ludhiana and Faridkot for speedy disposal of vigilance cases. Suresh Arora,DGP-cum-Chief Director,Vigilance Bureau,said the government has approved the establishment of special courts at Ludhiana and Faridkot instead of Jalandhar and Patiala.

Ex-sarpanch killed in domestic dispute

NAWANSHAHR: A fight between a husband and wife resulted in the murder of a former sarpanch of Malikpur village. Budh Singh (65) was killed late on Saturday night after a wife went to his house when her husband,Surjit Singh Nihang,allegedly began to beat her. Police said Surjit Singh followed her and knocked on Budh Singh’s door. When he opened the door,Surjit allegedly attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon and he died on the spot. The accused was caught and handed over to police.

Dal Khalsa slams UP statue vandalisation

HOSHIARPUR: Dal Khalsa on Sunday strongly condemned the decapitation of the statues of Bhimrao Ambedkar at three places in UP and urged the Akilesh Yadav government to take stern action against the culprits. Party general secretary Manjinder Singh and youth wing leader Prabhjot Singh,in a joint statement,said: “It’s shocking and disgusting to hear that the statues of Dalit icon Ambedkar has been vandalised.”

No poultry farms in residential zones

CHANDIGARH: No poultry farm in Haryana should be located within a 50-metre radius of residential zones and 200 metres from a major water course,an official spokesperson said on Sunday. All poultry farms have been directed to raise a green belt around them,minimise waste and refrain from open burning or indiscriminate dumping of any dead bird,feathers and unused material. These and other directions have been issued by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board under the Environment Protection Act 1986.

Dhumal sops ahead of Assembly polls

SHIMLA: Ahead of the assembly polls,Himachal Chief Minister P K Dhumal on Sunday laid the foundation stones and dedicated developmental projects worth over Rs 30 crore in Chopal constituency in Shimla district. The projects include an ITI at Chopal and a road from Kupvi to Bhalu besides laying of foundation stones of 60 KV Sub-Station at Lashtadhar near Chopal and Lift Water Supply Scheme to various uncovered habitations at Nagdhar.
