The Punjab Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on August 5 has been postponed.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on August 5 has been postponed. The postponement comes in wake of the change in Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s travelling plans. The new date for the cabinet is yet to be announced.

Power generation resumes at plants

SHIMLA: State’s mega hydel projects that were shut down on Thursday,following rise in the silt level in the Satluj river,resumed power generation on Friday after remaining closed for over 24 hours. The shutdown had affected electricity supply to northern states,including Punjab,Haryana,Rajasthan,Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi. “Power generation in all the six units of 250-MW each were resumed after silt content in the river came down to the permissible limits,” said Vijay Verma,Deputy General Manager (corporate communication) of SJVN.

CS asks DCs to act against encroachers

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Secretary PK Chaudhery has directed all the deputy commissioners of the state to act against encroachers in their respective districts and get the encroached land vacated,immediately. “In some villages,lands reserved for Charand have been or are being encroached upon. Such land are meant for the use of inhabitants of the village,and should not be allowed to be encroached upon by any person or group.

Lokayukta settled 784 complaints last yr

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Lokayukta claims to have settled 784 out of the total 1,184 complaints received last year and a quarter. Lokayukta Justice Pritam Pal (retd) disclosed the figures while addressing officers at Panchayat Bhawan in Narnaul,Mahendergarh,on Friday and urged them to generate awareness about the Haryana Lokayukta Act and Rules.

Youth Cong submits memo to Governor


CHANDIGARH: Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary met Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil at Raj Bhawan on Friday to submit a memorandum apprising him of the ‘deteriorating condition of the state’. Demanding a roll back in the recent power tariff hike,the Youth Congress said it had held six protests and the seventh will be held in Kairon village,Patti,outside the residence of Cabinet Minister Adesh Partap Singh on August 6. “If our demands are not met,we will gherao the CM and Deputy CM,” Chaudhary added.

Two workers die in Gurgaon tank

Gurgaon: Two daily wage labourers died while another fell critically ill after they inhaled toxic fumes while working inside an underground tank at an under-construction building in Nathupur. “By the time the men were pulled out of the tank,two had died. The third has been admitted to hospital. His condition is critical,” said Jagdish Prasad,SHO,DLF Phase II police station. No arrest has been made yet,said police.

Mobile phones seized from Ambala jail

CHANDIGARH: The mobile-phone menace inside Haryana jails refuses to die down as the Haryana Police,on Friday,recovered a mobile phone and two phone chargers from the possession of two jail Ambala Jail inmates. A team of around 60 police personnel raided the jail. In the past one year,jail authorities claim to have recovered over 20 mobile phones from Ambala jail inmates. Four of its wardens were also arrested for allegedly accepting bribes from inmates in lieu of smuggling mobile phones inside jail premises.
