The BJP was left red-faced on Tuesday when a party corporator, who was part of firebrand BJP legislator Devendra Fadnaviss delegation recently to Nagpurs Divisional Commissioner to express concern over the rising crime graph in the city and to demand transfer of Nagpur Commissioner of Police Ankush Dhanvijay, was caught red-handed at a gambling den in a slum here.
A Crime Branch team led by inspector Madhav Giri conducted the raid and arrested 29 persons, including BJP corporator Ramesh Punekar, besides seizing over Rs 16 lakh in cash and a Skoda vehicle from the Vasantrao Naik slum on Amravati road.
The raid was ordered by the police commissioner, after getting information that a gambling den was being operated in the slum by one Pintu Shende. Punekar was among those arrested from the spot.
He was among those leaders who met Divisional Commissioner B V Gopala Reddy and expressed concern at rising crime incidents and illegal activities in the city besides vociferously demanding Dhanvijays transfer.
Mayor Anil Sole of the BJP-led Nagpur Municipal Corporation couldnt be reached for his comment.
Fadnavis said the arrest of the party corporator was shameful and that he (Punekar) will be served a notice, but it doesnt in anyway change the reality that the crime scenario in Nagpur has deteriorated.
Punekar said,I dont have anything to say ( majha kahi mhanna nahi ). Asked if he was present in Fadnaviss delegation,Punekar said,Yes.
