Warns from targeting and victimising Congress workers
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Capt Amarinder Singh,on Wednesday, warned Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia against using “arm-twisting tactics” on their political opponents, particularly Congress workers. He added that governments that resorted to such methods did not last long.
Addressing a public meeting organised by local MLA Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa at Fatehgarh Churian,Capt Amarinder pointed out that Congress workers were being targeted and victimised with false cases. “Governments do not last forever and once Congress comes to power they will have to run for their life as people will be after them. Nobody will be prepared to provide them shelter,” Amarinder said while referring to Sukhbir and Majithia. He added that they would have to seek shelter outside Punjab.
Warning the Akalis against committing atrocities on Congress workers,Amarinder said the party would launch a “jail-bharo” movement in protest.
“If they are so fond of putting Congressmen behind bars we will flood the jails ourselves,” he asserted.
“If they (the Akalis) think they can finish the Congress through these arm-twisting tactics they are mistaken,” he said, while stating,“rather the resolve of the Congress workers is strengthened when they are targeted and victimised.”
The former chief minister said that before the elections the Akalis had promised the moon to the people and cheated them after being voted to power. “But,” he pointed out,“instead of delivering on those promises they slapped punitive taxes on the people of Punjab which the Congress had been vigorously opposing.”
Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar said, the Akalis were crying wolf over the alleged discrimination by the Centre, from where they had received maximum grants.
“Instead of utilising those funds on welfare schemes they were being siphoned off and embezzled,” he added.
