In an attempt to curb the innumerable immigration frauds, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday directed Punjab,Haryana and Chandigarh to allow only registered immigration agents to function. As per a report submitted by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs,at present there are only 47 immigration or recruiting agents in Punjab, seven in Haryana and 17 in Chandigarh, registered with the ministry.
A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh and R K Jain directed Punjab,Haryana and Chandigarh to comply with the provisions of the Immigration Act and ensure action is taken against those, who are not registered. The court also expressed its strong reservation to a demand made by one of the counsels, for publicising the list of registered agents.
Observing that the governments should not be spending money on advertising registered agents, the high court disposed off the petition. The petitioner,Justice (retd) Amar Dutt, had moved the high court seeking directions to Chandigarh,Punjab and Haryana to curb immigration frauds and human trafficking.
