90 posts lying vacant in state police force

As many as 90 posts of officers from the Additional Superintendent of Police rank and higher are lying vacant in the state.

As many as 90 posts of officers from the Additional Superintendent of Police rank and higher are lying vacant in the state. Some of these include sensitive postings in the Force One unit,an elite anti-terrorism commando unit,and in the Mumbai Police Crime Branch. Official records reveal that as many as six vacant posts are at the Maharashtra Police Headquarters.

According to the latest list of officers appointed across the state,among the posts lying vacant is that of the Additional SP (Urban Training Academy) for Force One. There are 10 vacant senior-level posts in the Mumbai Police. Of these,three are in the Mumbai Police Crime Branch while three are in the Local Arms unit. The Special Branch of the Mumbai Police has two posts lying vacant. Among the posts vacant are DCP Special Branch 1 (Protection),DCP (Economic Offences Wing),DCP (Preventive) and DCP (Special Task Force).

Among urban police commissionerates,the Thane Police,the Navi Mumbai Police and the Pune Police fare the best. While the Pune Police and the Navi Mumbai Police have no vacant posts according to the list,the Thane Police has two posts vacant.

Naxal-affected Gadchiroli range has four Additional SP-level vacant posts. The state CID has six SP level posts which are yet to be filled. Senior police officers said while a few officers had been given additional charge,work is being affected because of the pressure.

“Posts lying vacant is not a good thing. There is a dearth of officers. Steps have to be taken to fill the number of vacant posts,” said a senior Maharashtra police officer.
