Three persons were killed while five others were grievously injured after an explosion in the busy Samrala Chowk area of the city on Saturday. The blast took place around noon in a scrap shop owned by one Manjeet Singh.
The explosion was so strong that police could be seen collecting body parts from adjoining areas and packing them into sheets to take to the mortuary. The sound wave also shattered glass panes of a nearby building owned by an insurance company.
Jasbir Singh,a resident of Sarabha Nagar who was heading towards Transport Nagar when the explosion occurred said: Some shrapnel pierced one of the tyres of my SUV. I could see body parts crashing into a transformer and falling on the roof top of the adjoining building. Some body parts even crashed into the vehicles passing on the road. The scene was really bad.
The deceased have been identified as Balbir,Salegram and Kishore while the injured have been identified as Chhotu,Santram,Musibal,Rakesh Kumar and Mukesh Kumar. The injured have been admitted to the Apollo Hospital and Christian Medical College and Hospital.
The area of Samrala Chowk is one of the busiest areas of the city as the main national highway from New Delhi and the highway from Chandigarh meet here.
DCP Gurpreet Singh Toor ruled out any possibility of terrorist activity and said that there were some eight workers in the scrap yard at the time of the blast. The workers were separating brass from the waste when the explosion took place. We have called in forensic teams from Jalandhar and Chandigarh to look into the nature of scrap and the reason behind this explosion. we need to check if there was any kind of explosive material in the scarp and if it was there then what could be the source of the material, he added.
