The Punjab government on Monday recommended death penalty for those convicted in drug smuggling cases. Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said the recommendation was being forwarded to the Centre. Making Punjab free from drugs was one of the commitments of the Congress ahead of the Assembly election last year. “Since drug peddling is destroying entire generations, it deserves exemplary punishment. I stand by my commitment for drug-free Punjab,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, twelve people were arrested Monday in connection with the lynching of five people in Maharashtra’s Dhule district and sent to four-day custody. Those arrested are residents of Rainpada and between the age group of 20 and 30 years. The incident took place in the tribal hamlet of Rainpada in Sakri taluka, about 325 km from Mumbai. The mob reportedly comprised over 35 people, including some children.
