After pitting AAP Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann against Punjab deputy chief minister, all eyes are now on the Majitha constituency where Akali Dal’s Bikram Singh Majithia, also the revenue minister, will bid for another term from the area.
Majithia, who is also sukhbir’s brother-in-law, has been a long-time target of the AAP. He has also filed a defamation case against AAP national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal over controversial remarks allegedly made by him.
Watch what else is making news:
But now the question is who the AAP field to fight Majithia. Earlier, it had Sucha Singh Chhotepur, a popular local leader who resigned after he was accused of accepting bribe.
According to party insiders, the name of state convener Gurpeet Singh “Ghuggi” Waraich has been doing the rounds. AAP supporters on social media have been pushing his name too. Also doing the rounds is plans to field Ghuggi from Batala assembly constituency that falls under his native district Gurdaspur.
But the party is yet to ask local volunteers for candidate names. Sarabjot Singh, Amritsar zonal in-charge, said, “There are some issues which are decided at the party high command level. Party also asks local leadership and volunteers about while making such decisions. But so far there has been no discussion on this issue of candidate from Majitha with local unit.”
On Ghuggi, he said, “Party has not spoken to us about the candidate. There has been no such survey in my knowledge from Majitha constituency.”
Another AAP leader said, “There are many factors. If we field Ghuggi against Majithia then it can affect party campaign in state as Bhagwant Mann is already locked in a tussle with Sukhbir Singh Badal. Also, there would be some risk in filing some big name from Malwa in Majitha against Bikram. Mahja people may not accept an outsider.”
