Activist Trupti Desai has received another threat against her campaign to enter Mumbai’s Haji Ali Dargah from Haji Rafat Hussain of the AIMIM. “If she tries to enter Haji Ali Dargah forcefully we will smear black ink on her,” he told news agency ANI on Thursday.
After overturning the 400-year old tradition at the Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra of not allowing women to enter the inner sanctum of the temple, Trupti Desai, founder of the Bhumata Ranragini Brigade, is now set to enter the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai.
She launched the campaign ‘Haji Ali For All’ in April to allow women to the tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari and offer ‘chadar’ there.
She had announced earlier that she would enter the dargah on April 28.
The Haji Ali Dargah does not allow women to enter the inner chamber. Only men are allowed to go inside the Haji Ali Mazar and pray. This ban came into force in 2011.
Senior Shiv Sena leader Haji Arafat Shaikh had also threatened last week to ‘welcome her with slippers’ if she entered the dargah. The Shiv Sena, however, was quick to distance itself from the statement and said that they were his personal views.
The Haji Ali Dargah Trust also said that it would be anti-Islam to let women enter the tomb with the Azad Women Welfare Association chief Medina Shaikh joining him on the issue.
