SHO, Civil Lines police station, S K Dwivedi said the circumstantial evidence and investigation so far suggest that some personal reasons led to the attack, which occurred outside the AMU campus.
Arshad, a final year graduation student at AMU, belongs to Sir Syed Nagar locality, which is close to the university campus.
According to the SHO, Arshad was returning home Sunday night when three youths riding a motorcycle, their faces covered with scarfs, intercepted him a few metres away from his house. One of the youths fired at Arshad who sustained bullet injury on his left hand and fell on ground. Hearing gunshot, locals ran to his rescue forcing the assailants to escape.
Arshad was taken to the hospital, added Dwivedi.
Arshad told the police that assailants tried to snatch his vehicle and when he objected, they opened fire.
Earlier, on April 23, Mehtab (22) and Mohammad Waqif (18) died in exchange of fire that took place between two groups of students on AMU campus.
