Village head murder in Azamgarh: Mob sets ablaze vehicles, weaponry at police station

The mob was angry over the delay in police response after 38-year-old Singhasan Yadav, the gram pradhan of Motipur, was shot dead in adjoining Mudilpur village.

A mob attacked Maharajganj police station in Azamgarh district, torched several vehicles, records and weapons and damaged some portions of the building, following the murder of a village head late Thursday night.

The mob was angry over the delay in police response after 38-year-old Singhasan Yadav, the gram pradhan of Motipur, was shot dead in adjoining Mudilpur village.

According to police, Yadav was returning home from Maharajganj on his motorcycle when four persons intercepted him around 8.30pm and shot him nearly half-a-dozen times, killing him on the spot.

“The mob set on fire record books and some of the weaponry besides several motorcycles, including those belonging to the constables. Besides, the constables’ barracks were also damaged. Additional force was rushed,” said Azamgarh SP Rakesh Chandra Sahu.

Sahu said Yadav was killed due to enmity over block development committee elections. “An FIR against two named and two unidentified persons has been registered in connection with the murder. Both named accused are from Yadav’s village. Both the groups have been fighting elections against each other in the past,” he said.

Sahu confirmed that there was delay on part of the police as most of the personnel posted at the police station was deployed on Jaunpur border and other interior areas in connection with the panchayat elections. “Also, with the mob getting out of control, the remaining personnel at the police station were not in a position to do much and were forced to leave the premises,” he said.

However, an inquiry into the damage and the handling of the situation by the local police has been initiated. “We are ascertaining the extent of damage and will be registering an FIR. Also, action against police officials found negligent in their duty, if any, will be taken as per inquiry findings. Efforts are on to nab the accused named in the murder case,” said Sahu.
