Vadodara: Nine killed in Karjan road mishap

The eight victims belonging to two families were returning to Surat after offering prayers at Pavagadh temple when the mishap occurred.

Nine persons, including four children, were killed and three others seriously injured in an accident near Karjan town on National Highway-8 late on Sunday night, police said on Monday. According to Karjan police sub-inspector J Y Chauhan, an SUV hit the road median and overturned after the driver had lost control over the vehicle. Then the SUV collided head-on with a private bus on other side of the road killing eight of its occupants on the spot.

Two cars driving behind the bus also lost control due to the mishap, killing a woman and injuring three others in both the vehicles. The eight victims belonging to two families were returning to Surat after offering prayers at Pavagadh temple when the mishap occurred. According to police, the accident brought traffic to a halt on the highway for over an hour. However, public from a nearby village rushed to the spot and offered help.

The deceased have been identified as the Vikas Gehlot (28), Rinku Gehlot (27), Aarav Gehlot (2), Mithi Gehlot (4-months) – all residents of Pandesara area in Surat; Kailash Solanki (24), Nisha Rathod (30), Pari Rathod (5), Yuvi Rathod (3)- all residents of Pune, Maharashtra, and Jalak Shah (30), a resident of Ahmedabad. Three persons who sustained severe injuries are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karjan.

“The SUV was almost crushed in the collision. Police had to cut its door to take out the bodies of the victims. While one of the bodies was thrown out of the car and found near a road side bush. All the bodies were sent to Karjan health centre for autopsy,” Chauhan said Based on the complaint lodged by the private bus driver, police have booked a case against the SUV driver under Sections 279, 337, 338, 304 of the IPC and under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
