Amid the ongoing political crisis in Uttarakhand, the Congress and the BJP have both announced yatras across the state, which is presently under President’s rule.
While the Congress had Friday decided to begin the ‘Loktantra Bachao-Uttarakhand Bachao’ padyatra from Khatima on Sunday, BJP state president Ajay Bhatt Saturday announced a ‘Loktantra Bachao’ yatra in the coming week.
Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee state president Kishore Upadhyay and other leaders, including former chief minister Harish Rawat, will be part of padyatras at block and district levels. A massive padyatra will be taken out by all state party leaders from the Congress headquarters to Shaheed Bhawan in Dehradun on April 18.

The Congress will also hold programmes in villages of martyrs in the movement for formation of Uttarakhand as a separate state. There will also be meetings in villages of freedom fighters and servicemen who lost their lives while serving in the Army.
“We have prepared a list of nearly 500 people who were associated with the Uttarakhand Banao Andolan, those who lost their lives in the service of the Army, freedom fighters, eminent politicians and prominent personalities from the state who are no more. Yatras will be taken out in their villages, floral tributes will be offered before their photographs and statues, and residents of these villages will be told that the BJP has left the state in crisis for greed of power,” said Jot Singh Bisht, Congress state vice-president.
Bisht said Upadhyay will hold a padyatra in Bughani village of Pauri district — the native village of the late H N Bahuguna. “In that programme, we will target H N Bahuguna’s son Vijay Bahuguna, who joined hands with the BJP to dislodge the Harish Rawat government,” Bisht said.
Congress leaders will also hold programmes in villages of Gaura Devi known for the Chipko Movement, Shri Dev Suman who had staged a hunger strike against the monarchy in Tehri, Tiru Rauteli who used to be known as Laxmi Bai of Garhwal, freedom fighter Govind Ballabh Pant, etc.
