The Sashastra Seema Bal on Saturday asserted that the death toll from the Uttarakhand cloudburst is likely to be much higher as rescue and relief operations are ongoing.
Commandant 11 Battalion Didihat Rajesh Thakur said that more than 35 villagers are feared to be dead, many still missing and scores injured. “Rescue teams were sent to affected villages, but could not reach the core area due to numerous blockages enroute, worsening weather conditions and grave danger to their own party. But today, rescue parties were despatched after proper precautions. The first rescue team was sent to village Bastri, 3-4 km from Ogla(approximately 14 kms from Battalion HQ). They were able to recover eight dead bodies and despatched five injured personnel to the local hospital.”
Thakur said that SSB team was supported by NDRF, ITBP and local police. “Approximately 100 displaced people and their relatives from villages, Bastari, Urma and Patharkot have requested for lunch. The same is being catered by SSB and Assam Regiment. Search operation is in progress,” said Thakur.
Sashastra Seema Bal ( SSB) is a paramilitary force deployed on the Indo Nepal border.
