Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that the dues of sugarcane farmers would be cleared in six months if the BJP comes to power in Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking in Kairana during the BJP’s Parivartan Yatra, he said that several sugarcane farmers were on dharna demanding payment of dues. However, since the state has an SP government, he said, “hum chah kar bhi bhugtan nahi kara sakte (we are unable to pay the dues even if we want to)”.
Accusing the SP and BSP governments of pushing the state into backwardness, he said that if the BJP gets a majority in the Assembly elections in 2017, “UP will become the most developed state of the country in 10 years”.
Claiming that the BJP governments in several states had brought significant changes, Rajnath said the BSP and the SP governments faced several charges of corruption while the BJP governments headed by Kalyan Singh and himself had been spotless.
Noting the steps the BJP government at the Centre had taken for farmers, he said, “We provided Rs 3,000 crore to the state government as compensation for damage caused to crops by hailstorms.” Earlier, compensation was given when more than 50 per cent of the crop was damaged, but the PM reduced it to 33 per cent, he added.
