The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is going to bring both Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Mohammad Naveed and his local supporter Shabzar Ahmed Bhat alias Khursheed of Kulgam face-to-face to cross check their claims about the terror network and those involved in the attack on a BSF convoy in Udhampur in early August.
For this, the NIA Saturday produced Shabzar before the Special Court for NIA cases here and obtained his police remand for six days. It also obtained a three-day police remand of Naveed, who on October 13 was sent to judicial custody till October 26. During their detention in police custody, special judge Y P Kotwal ordered that the NIA will get both the accused medically examined after every 48 hours.
This, sources said, is being done in view of certain discrepancies in the statement of Naveed and Shabzar. The latter was arrested in the Kashmir Valley earlier this week. He happens to be the driver of the truck in which Naveed and his aide Nomen, also from Pakistan, had travelled from the Valley to Narsu nullah on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, where they attacked a BSF convoy, killing two paramilitary personnel and injuring nearly a dozen others on the morning of August 5.
While Nomen was killed in retaliatory fire by paramilitary personnel, Naveed was apprehended by locals in a nearby village, where he had fled after the terror attack. The truck was also later seized, sources added.
Shabzar was among the three wanted terror accused for whom the NIA had obtained non-bailable arrest warrants and announced a cash award of Rs 2 lakh each for any information leading to their apprehension. The other two included Fayaz Ahmed Itoo alias Fayaz Welder alias Fayaz Khar and Fayaz Ahmed Ashwar alias Setha, both from Kulgam.
Besides Naveed and Shabzar, the NIA has arrested Showkat Ahmed and Khursheed Ahmed in connection with the terror attack. Along with Naveed, they were also sent to judicial custody for 14 days by the special court on October 13.
Showkat had transported Naveed and Nomen in his truck along with four other Pakistani terrorists from Baba Reshi in Baramulla to South Kashmir after they infiltrated into the state from across the LoC. The other two Pakistani terrorists were identified as Abu Akasha and Mohammed Bhai.
Khursheed Ahmed Bhat was arrested for transporting Naveed and Noman to Jammu for reconnaissance.
