Three militants, including a 20-year-old associate of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani, were killed in an encounter with the police and Army in Tral area of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ishaq Ahmad Parray (20), who had earned the sobriquet of ‘Newton’ for his academic genius, was killed in an encounter that lasted for several hours at a militant stronghold in Tral. The two other militants killed in the encounter have been identified as Asif Mir and Ashiq Hussain.

The encounter that lasted for several hours began Wednesday evening when the joint team of J&K Police’s Special Operations Group and Army cordoned off the Mir mohalla neighbourhood of Tral after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of militants.

The police said people from Mirpora and nearby areas tried to march towards the encounter site to help the militants escape, as a result they had to fire tear gas shells in which a villager was hurt.

According to the police, 20-year-old Ishaq Ahmad Parray, a resident of Laribal Tral, had joined Hizbul commander Burhan last year. He had topped class X board exams with 98.4 per cent marks and excelled in class XII with 85 per cent marks. This earned him the sobriquet of ‘Newton’ from his friends and schoolmates.

The youngest of the four siblings — three brothers and a sister, who has done Masters in Science — Ishaq was preparing for the medical entrance exam before he joined Hizbul Mujahideen.

The second militant, Ashiq Hussain, a resident of Awantipore in Pulwama, had assisted Pakistan terrorist Naveed, who was involved in the Udhampur attack, to reach south Kashmir, said police sources. According to them, Hussain gave shelter to Naveed before he left for Udhampur. After Naveed was arrested, Hussain had gone underground, they said.

The third militant, identified as Asif Ahmad Mir, became a militant two and a half years ago. Police sources said that Mir’s father was also a militant and was killed in the early 90’s. He was the resident of Dadsara, the village where the encounter took place.
