Heightened security led to traffic pile-ups across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Thursday, owing to nakabandis, barricades and checking of vehicles. Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar urged people not to panic and follow normal routine. Navi Mumbai saw police officers monitoring each major roadway out of the city. “Every vehicle entering and exiting the city is being checked. There is a pile-up of traffic because of that, but people are co-operating with us,” said a senior police officer.
Traffic nakabandis were put in place at Gavan Phata, Pirwadi and Nhava Sheva. Every vehicle around Uran was individually searched, while Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport vehicles did not ply, the police said. Policemen were also placed at each building near UES School in Uran.
In Mumbai, nakabandis and barricades were enforced at roads leading out of the city. “Based on information received, an alert was issued and we are checking vehicles,” said Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police, Law and Order.
