Several people, including policemen, were injured in a clash that broke out in Haryana’s Palwal area on Thursday after local residents stopped a truck suspecting it was carrying beef. The police had to resort to firing in the air to control the agitated crowd.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, meanwhile, said an inquiry has been ordered into the matter and those found guilty won’t be spared.
Police said some local residents spotted three trucks carrying meat were crossing the Palwal-Aligarh road on Thursday. While two of the trucks managed to pass the area, the third was stopped. The residents suspected that the meat being transported was beef and it was on its way to Uttar Pradesh.
As the news spread, a crowd gathered at the spot and started pelting the truck with stones. They also roughed up the driver of the truck. Soon after, the police reached the spot but the people started pelting stones on them as well. The residents alleged the police let the two other trucks get away. The police later dispersed the crowd by firing in the air.
According to police, some people noticed blood dripping from the back of the truck following which it was stopped. Suspecting it to be beef, people got agitated and they manhandled the driver.
Local Congress MLA Karan Singh Dalal, who also reached the spot, said the people had demanded that a case be registered against the police personnel “who let the two trucks get away”.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested the truck driver, identified as Sajid, and registered a case under sections 279, 336 and 291 of the IPC.
