AMID AN upheaval over the decision of the Supreme Court on the Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, Haryana Finance Minister Capt Abhimanyu, who is also BJP’s co-cordinator for the Punjab Assembly elections, Friday said Punjab could see economic growth only under the leadership of Chief Minister Badal. Taking a dig at Congress and AAP, he said development in Punjab cannot come from either palaces or from comedians.
The Punjab government has called a special session of Haryana Vidhan Sabha on November 16 to discuss the issue. Haryana Assembly during the one day special session held on November 4 had passed a resolution condemning the statement made by Badal at Amritsar on November 1 where he said that he will not let a drop of water go to Punjab. BJP is in alliance with SAD in Punjab.
Addressing a press conference, Capt Abhimanyu said, “I will work with the party workers to ensure the victory of the party. The SAD-BJP alliance will form government for the third time. There are a lot of decisions that states take for their benefit. However, when it comes to the benefit of the country, everyone becomes one,” he said.
Capt Abhimanyu said as Haryana’s economic growth is much better than that of the state of Punjab, it should consider reviewing and redesigning its economic structure. The economic growth could not be ensured by relying only on agriculture thus Punjab should contemplate to work on manufacturing and service sectors and desist from raising political slogans.
He said this was the final decision of the Supreme Court and that everyone should respect it.
The Finance Minister said that the decision of the Supreme Court was in the interest of the country. Presidential reference under article 143 had been pending for about 10 years. Now as per the decision, construction of the SYL canal should be undertaken so as to make it functional. All parties should play a constructive role on the issue of SYL, he said.
“Bhupinder Singh Hooda should apologise as during the10 years of Congress rule in Haryana under his leadership, he did not make any effort for an early hearing on the issue and completion of the SYL canal. People of Haryana could have received the water 10 years ago if he had made some effort”” said Captain Abhimanyu.
On whether the Haryana government will meet the President as the BJP-SAD government in Punjab was planning to do, Capt Abhimanyu added that whatever steps will be taken by the Haryana government would be within the constitutional framework. The decision of SC will benefit both Haryana and Rajasthan. The concerns about food security will be addressed, he said.
