PM Narendra Modi on Thursday awarded the administration of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir for constructing separate toilets for boys and girls in 1,500 schools.

Receiving the award under the Swachh Vidyalaya category for Northeast and Hilly States, Anantnag Deputy Commissioner Sayed Abid Rasheed Shah said: “It was a massive exercise… We overcame this through community mobilisation. To ensure that quality is not compromised, we got a social audit done on the lines of the MGNREGA scheme.”

Shah said that the construction of toilets had a direct impact on children’s attendance in schools and dropout rates.
