Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule Saturday went to meet party leader Chhagan Bhujbal at Arthur Road Jail. Bhujbal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 14 on charges of money laundering.
After the meeting, Sule refused to comment on the issue and walked away by simply wishing “Happy Holi”.
Later, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “I see nothing wrong if any of our leaders visit Bhujbal. Afterall, he is our senior leader.”
However, after initially defending Bhujbal, NCP bigwigs have been cautious in coming out in his support, as the allegations against him are of large-scale corruption.
Officially, party leader Jayant Patil had condemned the manner in which Bhujbal was arrested, arguing, “When he was cooperating in the case, his sudden arrest shows it was a political ploy.” However, after a day’s protest, the NCP has been trying to distance itself from the matter.
“We cannot be seen issuing statements in Bhujbal’s favour every day when the investigation is still in progress. Moreover, we have to keep public perception in mind. We cannot be accused of supporting wrong-doings,” a party insider said.
However, sources in the party indicated it “stands by the Bhujbal family in its difficult time”.
