The Supreme Court junked a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) Tuesday which demanded an alternative to be brought to the collegium system used to appoint judges in the country.

The court said that doing the same would amount to amending of the constitution. The petition was filed by National Campaign for Lawyers and demanded setting up of an independent body of executive and judiciary for appointment of judges.

The collegium system hit the headlines last year when the central government demanded that it should be made more transparent. This happened after the top court, on October 14, 2015, struck down National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) as unconstitutional and restored the collegium.
