DELHI CHIEF Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged that Dalits of Una were beaten up by so-called gau rakshaks in collusion with the state government and asked the government to stop its “policy of oppression” else the people will teach it a lesson.
“They (Dalits) were beaten up in front of police station. Why did police remain mute spectator? If it happened in front of the police station and in the presence of police, it clearly means that they had a signal from the top. It was done with the approval of those at the top of administration and at the behest of the administration,” Kejriwal told media persons at PDU General Hospital in Rajkot on Friday morning.
Kejriwal also met Kanti Vala in the Rajkot hospital who is the prime accused of alleged stoning to death of constable Pankaj Amrelia in Amreli town on July 19 and has been undergoing treatment for injuries that he sustained during violence. The meeting sparked off reaction in the BJP which kept retweeting the news about “Kejriwal meeting a dalit accused of murder”.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying of the Raksha Shakti University in Gandhinaagar, chief minister Anandiben Patel said about the visits of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Kejriwal, “they know elections are round the corner, so they are doing politics”.
Kejriwal is also to meet Amrelia’s family in Amreli later Friday. He however dropped plans of going to Junagadh civil hospital after the lone suicide attempt patient was discharged in the morning.
The Delhi CM landed in the city this morning and went to the hospital to inquiry about health of the four Dalits who were allegedly brutally assaulted by a group of cow protection vigilantes in Mota Samadhiyala village of Una taluka in Gir Somnaht district of Gujarat on July 11. The four are undergoing treatment at the PDU hospital. Kejriwal also met around a dozen Dalits who have either attempted suicide in protest of atrocities against their community members in Una or have been injured in violent protests.
Kejriwal demanded immediate arrest of all the accused of Una case. “All those who have done this have not been arrested so far. They are saying that there were around 30 to 40 people and only 17 of them have been arrested so far. The remaining should be arrested immediately and should be given strictest punishment,” he said.
Apparently referring to killing of three Dalits in police firing in Thangadh town of Surendranagar district in 2012, the CM of Delhi alleged that the BJP government in the state was anti-Dalit.”It seems Dalits are persecuted in Gujarat. We are told some murders were committed in 2012 and charge-sheet has not been filed till date. No action has been taken. People are wondering if the 17 who have been arrested have been arraigned merely for a show! They wonder if they will also be released after watering down their charges a few days ago and the rest will not be arrested at all. When the administration is involved, such incidents take place. There is a big question mark. The BJP government in Gujarat is persecuting Dalits and is anti-Dalit. We demand those who are involved be arrested immediately,” said the Aam Aadmi Party chief.
The Delhi CM also alleged that Gujarat government was filing false cases against Patidar quota stir agitators and Dalit protesters and packing them to jails. “What type government is BJP leading! It is adopted a policy of oppression. A year ago, Patidar agitation was peaceful. We are told 2,000 youths have been booked in false cases including those for sedition. And now when Dalits have launched an agitation, they are slapping cases against innocent youths. We want to tell the BJP government that injustice cannot go on for too long. The Almighty is watching. One day, all these people will unite and teach you a lesson which you will remember. Stop this oppression otherwise people of entire Gujarat, all castes and faith will unite and teach you a lesson,” he said.
Kejriwal also demanded that those who have been beaten up should be given exgratia compensation and government job.
After meeting injured in Rajkot hospital, the Delhi CM left for Una to meet the family members of the four youths who were allegedly assualted by gau rakshaks.
