Six arrested with contraband worth Rs 6.5 crore, weapons

In a joint operation, Kapurthala police and Special Task Force (STF) nabbed a notorious gangster and five of his associates early Monday. Heroin worth Rs 6.50 crore and a cache of weapons were also recovered from them.

Police had received a specific tip-off that gangsters Gurpreet Singh Gopi, who has 27 criminal cases registered against him, and his aides were moving near Ghumanna and Fatehgarh villages in Phagwara. The Kapurthala police and STF put up police nakas at various places and began flagging down suspicious vehicles.

“The gangsters were coming from Fatehgarh village in a Qualis. When the police tried to stop their vehicle, they got down and opened fire. They then began running away from the spot but were eventually nabbed,” said Kapurthala SSP Rajinder Singh.

Around 8-10 rounds were fired from each side during the encounter that lasted a few minutes, said sources.

AIG, STF, H P S Khak said the gangsters operated in Doaba and Ludhiana and worked in coordination with gangsters lodged in Punjab jails.

“They used to take contract (supari) to attack people and were also involved in snatching and looting,” said Khak, adding the gang made videos of their crime and made them viral on social media sites to instil fear among people.

The gangsters also flaunted weapons on Facebook to allure youngsters, said Khak.

Besides Gopi of Rurka village in Jalandhar, others who have been arrested include Jatinder Singh alias Sonu Balalo of Balalo village in Kapurthala, who has eight criminal cases against him and is close to gangster Goru Baccha; Sukhbir Singh Sukha of Ghugrana in Ludhiana who joined the gang a year ago through Facebook and has five criminal cases against him; Mayank Singh alias Sunny Chopra Of Marla village in Nawanshahr district, Gurvinder Singh alias Ginda of Sundh Nawanshahr, Harvinder Singh alias Bhindha of Wahad in Kapurthala, who have some five criminals cases each against them.

Police recovered a number of pistols, including 9 mm, 32 bore, 12 bore, 38 bore 316 bore and 12 bore and cartridges, from the possession of the gangsters. Two swords and several other sharp weapons have also been seized.
