“I heard of the unfortunate incident in Latur. The party strongly condemns the disgraceful act. Those involved have been removed from the party,” said Aditya Thackeray, Yuva Sena chief.

Bhaikatti had addressed a press conference in Latur on Thursday to “expose” the illegal construction, police said.

Claiming that Bhaikatti was a blackmailer, local Shiv Sena cadres him up, held him hostage on the premises of a college and assaulted him in front of students.

He was beaten up with an iron rod and his face was blackened. The activist was later admitted to a hospital in Latur.

Earlier in October, former BJP member Sudheendra Kulkarni, who heads the Observer Research Foundation, was attacked by Shiv Sena party members who also blackened his face. The attack took place ahead of a book launch of former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri, organised by the ORF.
