Ending a prolonged dry spell, Shimla on Sunday experienced this winter’s first impressive snowfall, bringing cheer to the tourism industry as well as apple cultivators.
Snowfall was also experienced at Kullu Manali where tourists have already arrived hoping to spend their weekend with a walk in the snow.
In Shimla, snowfall started at around 11 am after a drizzle in the morning and continued until afternoon, painting the hill station, known for its heavy tourist footfall during this time of the year, white.
“I am very lucky to have already reached Shimla a day before on a weekend vacation. Now I will increase my stay by a day,” said Kirti Gupta, a banker from New Delhi.
On Saturday, Additional Chief secretary ( Revenue) Tarun Shridhar had alerted Deputy commissioners about a possible drought-like situation due to deficiency in rain up to 85 percent in January, which touched 100 per cent in some districts.”
The snowfall helps apple growers in Himachal Pradesh, which is among the states with the highest apple production.
