Madan Mitra’s Bhawanipore home was bustling with activity on Friday evening as his family members awaited his return after being granted bail in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam case.
Armed with green abir and garlands, a huge crowd of supporters had assembled at the gates after spending hours glued to the television awaiting the court’s verdict. On receiving the news, several locals came out on the roads to celebrate. “It is celebration time for the locality,” said a member of the local puja committee . Inside the house, the TMC leader’s wife Archana was busy with preparations to welcome him home after 21 months.
“We have been waiting for this day since long. I am so happy that baba will finally be with us on Durga Puja. My son is very close to his dadu. I couldn’t talk to him much after the court’s order, but I could feel he was very excited to spend time with us,” Swati, Mitra’s daughter -in-law, told The Indian Express.
“It is like getting a gift directly from Goddess Durga. We don’t understand the law. The moment we heard that he is coming home it was like the happiest moment of this year. We all have been waiting for this day,” said another family member. Another relative added that this month has been lucky for Mitra.
“After the Supreme Court’s Singur verdict, Dada was extremely happy. He spent happy moments behind bars on that day celebrating Trinamool’s. Now he has been granted bail and we are waiting to welcome him home,” he said.
Mitra, who was Mamata Banerjee’s shadow during the days of the Singur agitation, had received many good wishes party leaders, said his family. Sources said that the former Cabinet minister might return home on Friday night or Saturday morning after completing formalities.
