In some relief for the family of Union Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, police have dropped charges of rape and kidnapping brought against his son Karthik by an aspiring Kannada film actor last year. However, Karthik still faces trial for cheating.

The woman had, in August 2014, accused Karthik of kidnapping and raping her after promising marriage. She had lodged a complaint against Karthik on the day he was getting engaged to a woman of his family’s choice.

However, police sources said investigations revealed that on the day of the alleged kidnap and rape, the actress had flown down to Mangalore to join Karthik, who had arrived at his home a day earlier. Police have produced CCTV footage of other places where the two were seen together, to prove they were in a relationship.

Karthik had over 251 telephone conversations with her in July 2014, where they made plans to marry and start a family, the police said. Based on this evidence, Karthik has been booked for cheating the actress.

Karthik is to get married at the end of this month in Kodagu district.
