Two days after the video of a man purportedly dragging a woman out of a computer centre in Malaut went viral, the suspect, Jagdeep Singh, 35, surrendered before a court Friday. He had been booked on charges of rape and abduction on March 30. He allegedly raped the 24-year-old woman, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste, on March 25 after taking her to Tappakhera village. His friend Sandeep Singh, who allegedly drove the car, was booked on charges of criminal conspiracy.

Jagdeep was produced in a local court Saturday and remanded in police custody for three days, said Malaut DSP Manvir Singh.

CCTV footage obtained from a house near the computer centre shows that around 8 am on March 25, Jagdeep apparently entered the centre and came out after a few minutes, dragging the woman with him. A few employees ran after them, but to no avail.

DSP Manvir Singh said, “The woman came to us on March 30 and we lodged an FIR under rape, abduction and criminal conspiracy charges. Jagdeep and Sandeep had absconded by then. We launched a search for them.”

Police said a search was on for Sandeep, who is still absconding.

On April 21, the victim met National Commission for Scheduled Castes vice-chairman Raj Kumar Verka at Amritsar and shared details of the case, including the video, with him. Verka said, “The girl and her mother met me. They gave me a complaint and also showed me the video. I have summoned IG (Bathinda zone) J K Jain and Muktsar SSP G S Gill to appear before the commission on May 3 in New Delhi.”

Punjab DGP Suresh Arora, when asked why the the suspects were not arrested earlier, said he would seek a report from IG (Bathinda zone) in this regard. “Directions are in place to take prompt action in such cases,” Arora said. Despite several attempts, Bathinda zone IG J K Jain was unavailable for comment.

Muktsar SSP Gill said, “We were trying to arrest the suspects and had conducted raids. This forced the suspect to surrender.”
