A suspected cattle smuggler was killed in a shootout in Malate, Mahendragrah, on Tuesday night.

The police identified the deceased as Wasim alias Kala, a resident of Mewat. Police have arrested three people — Farukh, Nishar and Raees. A cow and a bull were recovered from the van seized by the police.

The incident occurred around 1.15 am when a police team tried to stop a van that was picking up cows from Narnaul, police said.

However, the alleged cow smugglers managed to escape. They were later held near Mori village with the help of villagers.

Narnaul SP Hamid Akhtar said, “The smugglers pelted stones and fired at the police vehicles. Near Mori village, the van skidded into a ditch and they hid in the nearby fields. The police searched the fields and, with the help of some villagers, arrested three of them,” said Akhtar.

The arrested accused said there were seven or eight of them. Police have registered a case under CrPC, Arms Act and Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act 2015.
